Touch Wood (2004)

for Solo Marimba (and one wood block)

Duration: 7:30 min

Commission: Mark Lowry

Premiere: Mark Lowry, August 24, 2004; Kansas City, MO

Program Note: To “Touch Wood” is the British idiom that is equivalent to the American “Knock on Wood.” Wood has since ancient times been associated with superstition, magic and protection against misfortune. Although the exact origin is unknown, today most consider the act of touching wood a mere custom or habit. Touch Wood for Solo Marimba was written for percussionist Mark Lowry, who I hope will have acquired enough knocking on wood to ward of misfortune for many years to come.
